Jogging vs Running, or, My Next Big Failure

leave a comment »

I am a jogger, not a runner.  I want to become a runner.  “What’s the difference?” you ask?  In my mind, speed and distance.

Joggers are slower and don’t travel nearly as far.  Right now, I jog through the woods a mile each day to a local dog park.  Then, after my mutt has been social for 30 or 45 mins, I jog back home.  (see map below)

I want to do more then this.  I’ve been motivated by friends, real and online, who are currently competing in 5k’s, 10k’s, half marathons and full marathons.  Two years ago I was doing 3.5 miles 3 times a week; I want to do that again, and more.  Also, sadly, I am also getting closer and closer to 40, and need to feel active.

Why am I mentioning all this?  Because I have been reading up on how to run, or rather, how to run well.  Yes, as stupid as it seems, there are techniques and styles to learn about something as simple as how to run.  I’ve learned that running takes a bit more work then just running each day.

So, the point I am trying to get to is… starting tomorrow, I am beginning a 90 day running workout plan.  As embarrassing as it is to advertise something so… sweaty and personal, I feel the need to do so.

Why?  So that I don’t slack off.  As I’ve mentioned many times before, I have a very hard time completing anything I start.  But, if I mention this fact publicly, I will be motivated not to quit.  Because quitting would be even more embarrassing then talking about this crap in the first place.

So, I’ve put this out there.  Wish me luck.  I’ll try not to go on and on about this, that’s not my goal, but I’ll keep you updated.

This video does a nice job of summing up my own personal philosophy.

So Much Going On

leave a comment »

I’ve been ignoring this site a bit lately.  There’s been alot going on these days.

First off, I’m in the middle of five books.  I find the time to start books, but not the time to finish them.

Then, of course, LOST ended, and well, I’m still trying to come to grips with that.

OKay, all kidding aside, a few family events happened recently that have taken up a lot of time.

First, we had to put down our 6 year old car, Peter.  I could go on about him, but instead, I’m just going to cut and paste what my wife wrote about him on her blog…

There Once Was A Boy Named Peter
We got Peter in 1994. It seems like a very long time ago. Peter was my college graduation present from Tim. He had been found in an abandoned house with his sisters and he weighed maybe 2 pounds? He was the tiniest cat I had ever seen but he didn’t seem to know that.

Peter - Day One

Peter - Day One

It only took a few months for him to grow and then he became the biggest cat I had ever seen. He was our version of a dog without having to get an actual dog. Nothing ever fazed him and this was good once we started bringing babies home. With each of the kids, the day we brought them home, the other 2 cats would scramble and hide. Peter would just sit there and check things out. After a while he would come over to smell them and then he would go off and take a nap.

Peter & Declan - November 2003

He believed the tub was his domain and grudgingly let us use it. He would keep an eye on us while we did it though. He made sure the kids got clean and then got out so he could get back in. Declan seems a little concerned about him here.

The kids could also push and pull on him and it never fazed him. Declan is demonstrating this here.

Peter and Grace - May 2001

He also made sure he had the warmest spot to sleep so he was happy to see the crib arrive. It concerned us at first but he never caused a problem and we came to see him as an extra blanket for them. As you can see, Grace didn’t mind him at all.

Then, when he was 14 years old he got sick with diabetes. He reacted well to the insulin and we kept him going for another 2 years. Last Thursday, we came to the end of his road and had to say goodbye. We miss him more than we can say and we will never have another cat like Peter the Cat.

Well, less then a week after Peter passed away, I heard from a friend that a friend of his had free puppies to give away.  We always contemplated getting a puppy, but wanted to wait until Peter passed away.  We didn’t want to put the “old man” through the stress of dealing with a dog.  Though, honestly, he would have taken it in stride.

It took some work to convince the misses that the puppy was a good idea.  She was worried about the mess, the smell, the work.  And to be honest, we were both feeling a little guilty about getting a new pet so soon after Peter was gone.  But, we did it, and we got the puppy.

The kids have named her Carly Meghan McMahon.  Here are a few picture…

So far, she has been relatively easy.  Potty training is going pretty good.  The accidents that have happened in the house have been because we were not paying attention to her more then anything.  (Still trying to get her to go to the door when she needs to pee.  So far, no luck with that.)

She is not a barker (good), but is a whiner (annoying).

She is a mutt, but looks good.  Kind of a generic dog.  Her parents were both medium sized dogs, so we’re hoping she doesn’t get too big.  Our house is too small as it is!

My daughter loves her, and takes her around the block multiple times a day, but my son, who is not a big fan of dogs, is still slowly getting used to her. (He stays up on the couch a lot, especially when she is full of energy and trying to play.)

Not sure what else to say for now, so I’ll just end this post.

Short and too the point. But I liked.

I will use this video to mock my friends some day.  Mark my words.
